CSE Starts Joint Project with Marietta Center for Advanced Academics
October 30, 2008
CSE is about to embark on a joint project with the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics.
The Marietta Center for Advanced Academics is a Magnet School for grades 3 to 5 whose curriculum concentrates in science and technology. One of the interesting aspects of the curriculum offered at MCAA is the fact that it is organized around modules, rather than disciplines.
The project, which is spearheaded by Jon Preston and Briana Morrison, Marka Ormsby and Robin Paul from TechMatters LLC, and Carol Shepherd, a CSE alumna, a member of the IT Industry Advisory Board, and a volunteer at MCAA, and Karen Smits, Principal at MCAA, will involve students from MCAA working with CSE students to develop a series of educational games in the area of oceanography. While details are still to be worked out, we are currently thinking about one game to teach children about submersibles and another to teach children about ecosystems.
We held a very successful kick-off event on November 22 during which the MCAA kids played games in the CSE gaming lab under the supervision and with the help of CSE students.
