Dean's Update, September 2010

STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE

As part of the kick-off meeting for the new year, CSE created a progress report on the implementation of its strategic plan. The progress report for last academic year is available at http://cse.spsu.edu/strategicplan/201009report.shtml

As mentioned in a previous Dean's Update, SPSU recently revised its strategic plan, and CSE will have to review its strategic plan in light of this. We set up a small committee to start this process. If you have any comments on our current strategic plan or SPSU's new strategic plan, or indeed if you have suggestions for the type of objectives CSE should be pursuing, please let me know. I can be reached by email at hreichge@spsu.edu or by telephone on 678-915-7399

CSE CENTER FOR HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

One of the objectives CSE will be pursuing concerns programs in the general area of health information technology. Because of the HITECH act, which was passed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act last year, there is considerable pressure on physicians and hospitals to implement electronic health records. At the same time, it appears clear that there are significant workforce shortages in this area. In order to help address this issue, CSE has established the CSE Center for Health Information Technology details of which are at http://cse.spsu.edu/chit/index.shtml.

As you will see, we are planning to offer workforce development programs in three areas, namely

  1. Awareness training for physicians and small hospitals
  2. Expedited training programs in health information technology for IT professionals, and
  3. Certificate programs for current or past students.

If you interested in any of these programs, or if you are active in the field of health information technology and you would like to help us develop programs in this area, please let me know.

HUNG WELCOMES HIGH SCHOOL INTERN

CSE has always prided itself of having a good relationship with the high schools in the area, and we have some success in joint projects with surrounding schools. It is in this context that I am pleased to announce that Dr Chih-Cheng Hung will be working with a high school intern from Wheeler High School, Richard Nagendran. Richard with work with Dr Hung in the Biometric Research Center.

AND FINALLY ...
