FAQ for Advisors

Q: Are my Non-Traditional students any different than my Traditional students?

A: No. For the most part the students have the same advising needs. Both types need to know what classes to take and what consist of a full load. The only difference is availability. You may need to extend your office hours or be willing to advise by phone or e-mail due to the hectic schedule of many Non-Traditional students.

Q: How do I know what courses the student has had?

A: There are two ways.

Q: What should I do if I don't know the answer to an advising question?

A: With all of the changes (quarters to semesters, new catalogs, hour requirement, etc.) in curriculum, both major and core, you are not expected to know everything. But you don't want to give the student the run around. Try calling your department head first (while the student is in your office) and see if he/she knows the answer. If you can not get your department head, send an e-mail and CC the student. That why everyone will get the answer.
